Thesis

American society has not been made by its laws and rights, but it has been molded by common  norms of men and women of all different backgrounds. The perfect example of this could be a white American family living what is considered the "American Dream".The sad part about this is that America has lived with these norms for so long that any other type of lifestyle that doesn't fit with these norms is rejected looked down upon, chastised and simply unaccepted. The neglect of these foreign lifestyles is strengthened with today's media that constantly promotes a "normal" lifestyle and causes ignorance. Today, the most controversial lifestyle is that of the LGBT. This is an interesting topic because the way that homosexuals are portrayed in media has made a major change since the 1990's but is still making changes in the present. For this paper, I want to talk about homosexuals fictionally covered in TV and movies as well as gays in real life (Jason Collins, Ricky Martin, Frank Ocean, etc.). I am interested in writing about this topic because nowadays there are out-of-closet homosexual figures like Jason Collins who are not stereotypical about their orientation. I will examine stereotypical representations of homosexuality and how they apply to media and how the new wave of positive and non-stereotypical homosexuality is slowly re-defining the way people look at the LGBT movement.
